Today is a busy day for me but I’m all about divesting mobbers of the power to harm. This they do by invading your home with unfamiliar phenomenologies that are difficult to describe, to document, and to report.
Tools to document structure-borne sound will be a short post, hopefully later in the week, offering a combination of tools that might more successfully capture the kind of structure-borne sound (and sound transferred by conductive coupling) that makes it difficult to prosecute these rogue neighborhood watch captains, block coordinators, and racketeering criminals. But if investigators can “tap” the commodes of “toilet-talking” jailbirds at facilities like the Sacramento Jail, you can probably find a way to capture structure-borne sound (legally and in your own home) too!
Once you’ve put a name on it, you can put together the tools to capture structure-borne sound. I’ll give you the centerpiece now. You’ll need to approach the project as “field recording.” Start with a contact microphone. Zeppelin Design Labs’ Cortado is known to be good. They are good people and helpful, even if your use of their electronics might be a bit “off-label.”
The Cortado is available, prebuilt, for $159, which is a drop in the bucket when you compare it against what it costs to defend your house and your life against Trumpy anti-choice haters, block watch scum, and predatory profiteers. Makers who like to work with small electronics can get this nifty piece as a kit for less than $50, with good beginner instructions. Note, however, that you will need a soldering iron and sundry other supplies as well as the time to build the microphone (fingers crossed!) before you can put it into play. Make sure you read the assembly instructions on the Zeppelin site before you go this route, to ensure you know what you’re getting into.
